Dia De Muertos Skull Bouquet

Last year I shared how I made a DIY Candy Skull for this season, and today I’m sharing how I branched off of that a bit to use the skill as a vase for a dried flower bouquet.
The fact that these Dollar Tree skulls are hollow is somewhat of a blessing because it gives you quite a bit of room for creativity! There are so many different things that you could use these for, from wreaths to this that I’m sharing today.
If you want the details about the Candy Skull, go back and take a look at this tutorial. I’m starting from having my Candy Skull already decorated.
For this project I used dry flowers and other dry grasses and items that I found around my home and property. You don’t have to go out and buy expensive dried flowers to do this. Arranged nicely, even just some dry grasses could look nice.

Use a razor blade to cut a hole in the top of the skull. What I didn’t take a picture of was when I glued some rocks into the chin of the skull before adding in the floral foam. The rocks, or some other heavy item could be used, to weigh down the front so that when the flowers are all inserted the skull doesn’t tip over so easily.

Hold onto this top portion and use it to trace around for the floral foam. You’ll want a couple of pieces cut to insert so that it sits high enough inside that your stems can reach without breaking.

Trim the foam to fit. It doesn’t have to be pretty since it will be inside and not visible.

Once you have the foam cut to fit, use some hot glue to glue it in place inside so that I doesn’t slide around as you’re working with inserting flowers.

From this point on, it’s pretty self explanatory. You’re going to arranged your florals in a way that will make it look almost like the skull is wearing a headband. Dried fruit can be impaled on wooden skewers and inserted among the flowers. You could even add in other elements if you wanted, like small branches, colorful leaves, or moss. The sky is the limit.

For my family, the next month of November we are observing keeping the souls of those who have passed on in our prays. So this guy can hang out around the house for a little bit longer before we head into the Advent and Christmas season. To store it, you could get a smaller sized Rubbermaid container, put the skull on the inside of the lid, and use the tub over the top. It could be stored away for years to come! Or you could always remove this years floral arrangement and make a new one the following year. Make a new family tradition, even, by make a new bouquet each year.
