Eggshell Arrangement

With the plethora of eggs that we get, we always have a bunch of shells as well that I set aside for various projects that come to mind. Painting them for Easter, or pouring candles in them. This time I thought I’d try to use them as “planters” for a center piece for the table.

It’s very Spring-like, and whimsical. And, here’s a perk….if you have to replant the little plant (or throw it out because it died), it can be thrown in to the compost pile with no worries. I can’t tell you how much is bothers me throwing away those plastic planters from the garden store. I’d like to think they’re resuable, but most times they break down in the weather after a single season and turn into a pile of messy plastic bits everywhere. The egg shell can be smashed and will break down, adding nutrients instead of plastic by-product.

With the goose eggs, I used a knife to tap a circle crack around the top. Empty out your liquid egg, and save it for cooking. Rinse the egg shell, and then poke a small hole in the bottom with a nail or screw for drainage. You can plant in it, just as you would with any other planter. It is a little bit more fragile, so do handle with care.

After planting the egg shell, I laid first a plastic bag in the bottom of my vessel to protect it from moisture. Then I laid out some small rocks and covered it in moss. The rocks help hold things in place, and the moss and rocks combined help to add a stable place for the egg planters to sit.

A few good choices for these little planters are bulbs, succulents, or something like a Strawberry Begonia that will do well in small spaces and can be transplanted after a season.

I set some additional eggs around the vessel for aesthetic purposes, and added in a couple of candles as well. It feels “fancy” for my family, but is an easy and inexpensive way to make a seasonal center piece. Depending on the season you are in, you could add in some decorative birds or bunnies, bells or Christmas tree balls. Or some sort of religious statue or Cross. This gives you an open canvas of sorts, to use your imagination.

I also like the idea of using various different types or heights or candles. It could add some soft light to your meal time.

Hope you enjoy trying this yourself!
